Can my child be suspended for missing school or being late to class?

No. Schools may not suspend or expel a student for absences or tardiness.

Washington state rules on school discipline have been changing in recent years. The rules used to allow schools to suspend students for skipping school. That is no longer permitted.  Instead, schools are required to work together with families to try to understand and address the reasons for the absences.
