Complaints and Processes
While navigating K-12 education, concerns can arise that also may lead to disagreements. These disagreements can mean a lack of acknowledgement that an issue exists impacting a student’s education, misunderstanding of what the issue is, or how best to resolve the matter. Sometimes there are opportunities for informally resolving concerns. Options may include setting up a meeting to discuss any barriers to educational access and to explore a pathway for a resolution with staff within a school community or district. OEO is also here to serve as a brainstorm partner to talk about potential next steps for consideration to address concerns.
In other instances, there may reasons for exploring and ultimately using formal dispute resolution options. Depending on the issue, there may be a designated process for filing a complaint. For example, a Special Education Community Complaint can be filed to address violations of state or federal policies relating to special education services within one year of the alleged violation. This page provides information on existing complaint processes for formally addressing disputes. OEO can answer general concerns about various complaint processes.
